Shift finished, Phil took us to a white jeep in a nearby parking lot. The area still buzzed with activity, though I was exhausted. Music floated from a nearby restaurant. Orange light bathed her jeep.

“What is she?” Phil whispered to me. “Besides part human, part I have no idea. Some sort of Japanese something? They have some very interesting supernaturals.”

“That they do. But no. Siren.”

She nodded. “Which is why you’re in a band. Got it.”

Someone leaned against the car like in one of those old movies Jules liked.

“What do you want?” I spat at Eric. It took me a moment to realize I didn’t say it in English, years of being brutalized by Drakken children catching up to me.

“Why are you so mean?” Eric countered, also in Homespeak, standing up straight, face screwing up in disbelief. “I’ve done nothing to you. I don’t understand.”

I didn’t want him to.

“Sorry,” I muttered, in unheartfelt English, keeping my eyes on him as if he might torment me at any moment.

Phil shifted her backpack down from her shoulder. “You know each other?”

“Hey, isn’t that the guy who upset you at dinner?” Jules gave him the stink-eye. “Don’t piss off Bitsy, it’s not okay.”

I held up my hands in surrender before she could compel him to jump into the lake. “Eric wasn’t mean to me, and yes, he was our waiter at dinner.” My belly sank as the pieces fell together and I turned to Phil. “Please tell me this isn’t the housemate?”

“She’s the guardian who called on the Brotherhood for assistance?” Eric checked his phone then looked at me, brow creasing. “I thought guardians were human. And extinct.”

“Apparently, guardian is a calling, not a race,” I muttered. “Eric, this is my bandmate Jules, Jules, this is Eric, who’s going to help us.”

Phil climbed in the driver’s seat. “Ready?”

“Yep,” I climbed in to the back, Jules with me. “You coming?” I asked Eric.

He paused, gazing at me. “Do you want me to?”

Phil made an annoyed noise. “Get in the car, loser, we’re hunting trouble.”

Did I really want his help?

“Fine,” I huffed. Drakken were good at researching.

Eric climbed into the front. “I checked with the boss. They can’t aid us with the demons. But they’ll help us with the thaumaturgists if we need them to.”

I wasn’t sure if I should be relieved or not so I stared out the window into the darkness as we drove back onto Mill Avenue. I logged into the Witchapedia app with Sally’s password.

Eric turned in his seat and studied me for a moment. “I’m not going to hurt you, I promise,” he said softly in Homespeak.

“Why?” I shot back in the same language. “Everyone else does.” My mouth snapped shut and I looked away. Why had I said that?

“You speak Dragon?” Phil glanced at me in the rearview mirror. “That’s unexpected.”

“Drakken.” Why did I react to Eric so badly? I didn’t react to the Drakken in LA like that. Also, he was hot. But his dominate mojo, and the fact his was Drakken, killed it for me.
